Apple recommends that you use Apple-approved DIMMs. You can purchase memory upgrade kits by visiting an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Reseller. If you need to order replacement memory, contact Apple.

Mac Pro supports up to 12 DIMMs installed in configurations of 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 DIMMs, as shown in the images below. These images can also be found on the inside of the DIMM covers. For maximum performance, install DIMMs in a 6 or 12 DIMM configuration. If your DIMMs aren't identical in capacity, learn how to install DIMMs of mixed capacities.

Your Mac Pro ships with DIMMs preinstalled in some or all of the DIMM slots. Before you can install memory, you might need to remove some of the DIMMs to match a supported configuration or to meet mixed capacity R-DIMM installation requirements.

If you don't replace the DIMM covers, system performance may be affected. Reinstall the housing or top cover Follow the steps to reinstall the housing on Mac Pro (2019) or the top cover on Mac Pro (Rack, 2019).

If you want to test any single channel or the DIMM itself, you can use a 1 DIMM configuration by installing a single DIMM into the first slot of a channel. If you want to test the second slot of a channel, install DIMMs into both slots of a channel.

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to improve the performance of your Mac Pro is to increase the RAM (Random Access Memory). A Mac Pro memory upgrade means your Mac Pro can better handle multitasking between programs, perform faster during most day-to-day tasks, and it will also be less susceptible to spinning beach balls and crashes. If you work with large files or use memory-intensive applications, maxing out your RAM is a must.

You can upgrade the memory on a Mac Pro, and it's a breeze. There are many benefits to upgrading with OWC memory besides experiencing lightning-fast performance. For instance, an OWC Mac Pro memory upgrade can give you up to 75% savings versus factory options!

Mac Pro has a 6-channel memory controller that supports 12 memory slots you can use to install up to 1.5TB of memory using 2933MHz DDR4 ECC compliant memory DIMMs. To ensure compatibility, Apple recommends that you use Apple-approved memory. You can purchase Apple-approved memory online from the Apple Store or by visiting an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Reseller.

The Mac Pro supports both R-DIMMs and LR-DIMMs, but you can't mix these two memory types. Mixing R-DIMMs and LR-DIMMs will result in a memory error flash of the status indicator light when you turn on your computer.

The DDR3-1866 DIMMs for the Mac Pro require a Thermal Sensor for full performance and compatibility. Many 3rd party Mac Pro DIMMs do not include this sensor. Ramjet memory always conforms 100% to the Apple spec, and these DIMMs include the Apple thermal sensor.

Tri-channel memory configuration gives a slight performance advantage. The DDR3-1866 DIMMs for the Mac Pro will run 1-3% faster if they are installed in matched sets of three (tri-channel). You may add DIMMs in any combination, but performance will suffer slightly if the DIMMs are not matched 3x at a time.

Non-Mixable 16GB and 32GB DIMMs: 16GB and 32GB DIMMs can ONLY be used with identical 16GB or 32GB DIMMs from the same batch (i.e. ordered at the same time.) 16GB and 32GB DIMMs can NOT be mixed with each other.

Matched Modules: The Ramjet kits for the Mac Pro DDR3-1866 contain a matched set of DIMMs. The kit will consist of identical brand/model/spec IC's. They will be from a single batch, and will have matching series numbers. This ensures maximum performance, and perfect compatibility.

Ramjet offers same day shipping for UPS Overnight and UPS 2-day air orders for in-stock items that are received by 3pm Central time Monday through Friday (Holidays excluded.) UPS costs are calculated based on promixity and package weight.

EveryMac.com also provides RAM upgrade instructions for other Mac Pro models -- the original Mac Pro (MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1), "Early 2008" (MacPro3,1), and "Mid-2010" and "Mid-2012" (MacPro5,1) systems.

Just as it is for the original and "Early 2008" Mac Pro models, upgrading the memory in the "Early 2009/Nehalem" Mac Pro line is a simple process. Even though the memory used in the "Early 2009/Nehalem" Mac Pro models do not have the same enormous heatsinks as memory used by earlier Mac Pro models, it nevertheless is critical that the memory meet precise standards and be installed in a particular order to function properly. The "Early 2009" line also can use more RAM than is officially supported, too.

However, for the purposes of upgrading the RAM, the "Early 2009" Mac Pro models can be identified properly by the Model Identifier in software and externally by EMC Number. More details about each identifier is provided in EveryMac.com's extensive Mac Identification section.

To locate the model identifier, select "About This Mac" under the Apple Menu on your computer and click the "More Info..." button. If the Mac Pro is running OS X "Lion" (10.7) or later, click the "System Report" button after clicking "More Info..." as well. Regardless of the number of cores, all "Early 2009" Mac Pro models share model identifier MacPro4,1.

Please note that the low-end "Quad Core" models -- Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (2009), "Quad Core" 2.93 (2009) and "Quad Core" 3.33 (2009) -- have four memory slots. By contrast, the high-end "Eight Core" models -- Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.26 (2009), Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.66 (2009) and Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.93 (2009) -- have eight memory slots.

Likewise, OWC first discovered the "Eight Core" models could support 64 GB of RAM when booting the system in 64-bit mode running Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" and later increased this maximum to 96 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or later versions of OS X. More recently, OWC yet again discovered these "Eight Core" models can support up to 128 GB, but only when running a 64-bit version of Windows XP or later or Linux. Mac OS X only can support 96 GB of RAM.

From testing both systems, the always excellent BareFeats reported that three memory modules in the Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (2009/Nehalem) and six memory modules in the Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.26 (2009/Nehalem) are faster than the maximum of four and eight modules, respectively. This is because each Nehalem processor has three memory controllers, so it is slower for the processor to access the fourth one. However, BareFeats noted that the "vast majority of real world applications do not saturate the memory bandwidth" so it wouldn't necessarily be slower to maximize the memory.

However, OWC noticed the manual and the Memory Slot Utility software that is pre-installed on the "Early 2009" Mac Pro provide contradictory information about which slots should be populated to maximize performance. For maximum speed, use the information provided by the application rather than the manual. 2ff7e9595c
